The Pediatrics Council of the International Chiropractors Association (ICA) Announces Research Initiative into the Role of Chiropractic Care for Children with Ear Infections.
October 20 2003--The International Chiropractors Associations (ICA) Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics calls for further research into the role of chiropractic care for children with ear infections. In 1996 the Council's peer-reviewed journal, The Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics (JCCP) published a landmark study on the role of Chiropractic care for children with ear infections. Authored by Dr. Joan Fallon, the pilot study demonstrated that there was significant efficacy for children both with chronic as well as acute otitis media who sought the care of a chiropractor.
The results of the study demonstrated that children who had acute otitis media cleared up in 6-8 days and those with chronic otitis media cleared up in 8-10 days. The most remarkable result of the study demonstrated that with chiropractic care the recurrence rate was extremely low in comparison to the norm. Only 11 % of the acute otitis returned after 6 month following chiropractic care, and 18% of the chronic returned within the 6 month period following chiropractic care. While these findings were part of a pilot study, and thus have limitations, the findings lay the groundwork for further research.
The ICA Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics announced today that it will utilize its network of Pediatrics Diplomates who are 3 -year post graduate trained doctors of chiropractic and Board Certified, to conduct a large study involving over 500 children. The study will examine the role of chiropractic care for otitis media, referral patterns from physicians, the recidivism rate of otitis media, and patient /parent satisfaction with care. Pending the outcome of this study, a case controlled studies involving the use of antibiotics vs chiropractic care will be undertaken.
"For over 100 years chiropractors have seen children in their offices with an enormous safety record," said Dr. Fysh Vice Chair of the ICA Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics. "Chronic ear infections are just one of the conditions chiropractors are accustomed to seeing in their offices. We are pleased to announce this initiative with respect to research into this area. The public deserves an alternative to antimicrobials and surgery when appropriate"
The Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics is one of the specialty councils of the International Chiropractors Association based in Arlington, Virginia. The Council is the examining body for the Board Certification Examination for Chiropractic Pediatrics.
